Malta
The Maltese Islands which consist of Malta,
Gozo, Comino and two other uninhabited islands, are situated in
the middle of the Mediterranean Sea and have a population of just
over 380,000. Malta is 93 Km south of Sicily and 288 Km from North
Africa.
The largest island of the group, from which the archipelago takes
its name, is Malta. It is the administrative, industrial and commercial
centre of the whole archipelago, well served with harbours and an
international airport at Luqa. The second largest island is Gozo.
It is topographically quite different from Malta, due to its less
industrialised way of life and tranquil surroundings. The island
of Comino, which contains only one hotel, is a tourist resort due
to its fine beaches.
The climate is warm and healthy. There are no biting winds, fog,
snow or frost. Rain falls for only short periods and averages about
578mm in a whole year. The temperature averages 14.10C in winter
(November - April) and 320C in summer (May - October).
Malta is an important tourist resort and is rich in history. Excavations
indicate the existence of an advanced culture dating from 4000BC.
Due to its strategic position, it has always attracted the attention
of maritime powers. The Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs, Knights of St.
John, French and English all took their turns at ruling Malta. The
Maltese Islands possess a wealth of history and culture which are
manifested in numerous historical sites, museums and areas of interest.
